We have been waiting a long time for an announcement about the planned Special Events Center. At least twice a year for the last four years, we have been told that an announcement was coming. Unfortunately, we are still waiting. Finally, the arena has appeared as an agenda item on the facilities committee of the UT Board of Regents meeting on February 11, 2009. It looks like we may finally get some action. Meanwhile, UTSA and Lamar University, both of which institutions already have nice basketball arenas, are moving forward with their football plans. Lamar hired a football coach and three assistants, and have recruited their first class of players. They plan to start NCAA football in 2010. UTSA has received UT Regents' approval for athletics expansion, including football to begin in 2011. They will hire the new football coach in February 2009.
